When the Ache Feels Unbearable: A Devotional for Moms Facing Baby Loss

When the Ache Feels Unbearable: A Devotional for Moms Facing Baby Loss

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

– Psalm 34:18

Reflection

There are moments in grief when words feel empty — when even breathing feels heavy. Baby loss brings a kind of ache that can’t be explained, and sometimes the silence around you can feel deafening. But God doesn’t meet you with silence. He meets you with Himself.

Psalm 34:18 says He is close to the brokenhearted. Not distant. Not waiting for you to “get over it.” He draws near — to the hospital room, to the nursery you never got to use, to the nights you can’t sleep because you’re replaying every “what if.”

I’ve had the honor of creating many pieces for families walking through this — painting ultrasounds, embryos, and tiny hand or footprints for babies whose mamas never got to hold them long enough. Over and over, I’ve watched Him whisper comfort in ways only He can. Not by erasing the ache, but by sitting in it with you and promising that one day, He will wipe away every tear for good. (Revelation 21:4)

Prayer

Jesus, hold me close in this season. When my arms ache for what I’ve lost, remind me You’re near. When I don’t understand the why, help me trust Your heart. Thank You for seeing every tear I cry and every memory I carry. Help me hold on to Your promise that this isn’t the end — that You’re making all things new. Amen.

If you’re walking this road, I pray this Scripture surrounds you with His peace today. You’re not alone. And even if your prayers are just whispered tears, He hears every one of them.
