Dear Mama,
If you’re reading this, maybe you’ve just had your first ultrasound. Or maybe you’re about to. Maybe you’re still replaying that moment in your head.
You’re in that dim room, trying not to overthink everything. The gel is cold. The paper on the table crinkles every time you shift. You’re staring at the screen, hoping you’ll actually understand what you’re looking at.
And then they say it.
“There’s your baby.”
At first you’re like… wait, where?
It’s blurry. It’s tiny. It doesn’t look like the perfect little babies you see online. It’s just this little shape and a flicker.
And then you realize - that flicker is a heartbeat.
Your baby’s heartbeat.
Something shifts in that second. It’s not just “I’m pregnant” anymore. It’s real. There’s a life growing inside of you, and you just saw it.
Maybe you tear up. Maybe you just stare. Maybe you laugh because it suddenly feels overwhelming in the best way.
And here’s something I hope you know:
God already knows that little heart. He’s known it long before you ever heard it. Before you even knew this baby was coming, He did.
Psalm 139 says He knits each life together in the womb. That’s what you’re seeing on that screen. Not just cells. Not just science. A life being formed on purpose.
You don’t have to feel ready right now.
You don’t have to know what kind of mom you’ll be.
You don’t have to have the nursery figured out or the books memorized.
You just get to sit in this moment.
The first time you saw your baby.
The first time you heard that fast little heartbeat and thought, “That’s mine.”
One day this will be a memory you talk about. But today, it’s fresh and new and a little surreal.
You’re already her mom.
You’re already his safe place.
And you’re going to grow right alongside this baby - step by step, grace by grace.
And if you ever find yourself wondering what to do with that first little image - the one that started it all - know that it doesn’t have to live in a drawer or fade on thin ultrasound paper.
That first glimpse is worth preserving. Not because it’s perfect, but because it was the beginning.
With love and grace,
Kel
